Lesson #3

Topic: You and Your Bible – Spiritual Food

Text: 2 Tim. 3:16-17

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

This scripture is also called:

The doctrine of the “inspiration of Scripture” or

The “verbal plenary inspiration” (other words every word was inspired of God and was without error)

The Christian walk entails understanding some basic tenets about the Bible.

The Bible is God’s Word to man and woman and it reveals the following:

  • The Plan of God
  • The Nature of God
  • The sinfulness of man
  • The Plan of Salvation
  • The prospect of heaven for the saved
  • The doom of the unsaved in hell
  • The guidelines for Christian to follow…act and live as we should

God used speaking to man through dreams, visions and the spoken word through His prophets. Heb.1:1-states: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways (NIV).

Knowing man is not perfect; God supervised His writings through them and did not allow these men to make any errors when recording His word. It is the Holy Spirit that directed them. For we know, 2 Peter 1:21 said, “Prophecy came not by the will of man: but by holy men of God who were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, all scripture is “inspired” of God and is profitable to us. Even today, the Bible is still under attack to disprove God’s word, but with all these challenges, these efforts have fallen short. Every word in the Bible has been put there by God and it will stand!

In God’s word Mat. 24:35 assures us “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

God’s desire is for us to grow and mature daily in His Word. The Bible is the spiritual food which is absolutely necessary for Christians to grow and develop.

New born babies cannot develop and grow into adulthood unless they eat properly. The only way a Christian can develop and grow into maturity is to have the Bible in his/her life every day. Some believers feel once or twice a week would be enough but they will suffer severely of malnutrition.

In addition to spiritual food the Bible is our light: Ps. 119: 105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path”

The Word of God and the Holy Spirit gives us direction.

We (Christians) are in warfare with Satan. It is Lucifer’s job to pull away every possible believer in Jesus as Lord. God provides the Bible as our spiritual weapon. As warriors we need to be fitted completely from head to toe. Ephesians 6:11- put on the whole armor of God so we can stand against the tricks of the devil.

In that same chapter Eph. 6:12-17 tells us how to equip for warfare.

Remember Jesus was tempted by the (Mt. 4:3-11) and He met every temptation. We will be tempted and need to strive doing the same. Our Bible is our sword in battle against Satan’s temptation.

We are encouraged to study and digest the Word of God. We must study it (II Tim. 2:15). I will conclude by saying, ROM. 10:17 – “Faith” cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

We need this faith in order to live properly for the Lord. One way to study is to hear it preach and taught at your church.

Prayer:

Father, please show Your direction and guidance to all seeking more understanding of the Word. Protect us and reinforce our perseverance to look to You as the Author and Finisher of our faith.

 Amen
