4/22/15 – Lesson #2
Topic: Your Responsibilities as a Child of God
Focus Scripture: Rom 12:1-2
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” II Cor. 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
After a person accepts Christ, he/she is saved; he/she becomes anew creature in Christ. Additionally, you now have a desire to do what is right and the spiritual ability to live a godly life because the Spirit of God in within you.
Eph. 5:18 states “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”
We should not to be ashamed that the Spirit of God dwell within us (Rom. 1:16), “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth: to the Jew first, and also to the Greek”.
As a result you should let people know that you have been saved. We start out as babes in the relationship, and with the Word of God move toward maturity. The following of God’s Word, will internalize and be the foundation for more to be built upon it. The more obedient we are the quicker we grow.
Instructions were given to the disciples by Jesus.
Mat. 29:19-20 said, Go ye therefor, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
- “Teach” or win the lost to Christ and
- “Be Baptized”
- Baptism happens when a person is immersed under the water as a picture or symbol of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
Acts 2:41, we find a person was saved; he was baptized and joined the local church. This baptism identifies us with the body of Christ and the local church.
It’s in God’s church:
- Whereby the Word of God is to be taught (Bible)
- Have are to fellowship with other Christians
- Where we are to pray and worship the Lord
Sunday T.V. worship service or radio preaching cannot replace the church experience. We need to be in church!
Let us not get this confused with what Peter and John did in the Book of Acts 8:16 (8: 9-17) and
Paul’s comment about baptism in Acts 19:5 (go to passage and explain; read 19:1-6)
One of the very first things we need to do when saved is to be baptized and join a local church.
